Building Better Bites: Can Invisalign Fix Bite Misalignment?

Over the last few decades, Invisalign has risen to become one of the most popular orthodontic treatments on the market. These thin aligners are nearly invisible and very sleek, making them an incredibly convenient way to straighten your smile.

Given the subtle nature of the aligners, patients sometimes wonder if they’re really capable of all the same things that braces are. For example, can Invisalign help you deal with your bite problems? If you’re curious, here’s what you should know.

Can Invisalign Correct Bite Issues on its Own?

The answer to this question is a bit complicated and depends a lot on the particular nature of your situation. On their own, Invisalign aligners are only capable of moving the teeth, not the jaw. This means that they’re able to address minor bite misalignments that can be solved by moving the top and bottom teeth closer together.

The Power of Invisalign Attachments

For a long time, this was the end of Invisalign’s story. However, in recent years Invisalign attachments have risen to prominence, allowing this procedure to address much more complex alignment issues.

For example, your dentist can attach small brackets to your teeth that can be used to hold elastics. Used properly, these small attachments can gradually draw the top and bottom jaw together, addressing overbites or underbites.

In more severe cases, your dentist can also use something called a “motion appliance.” This is a small mobile bar that can be attached to the teeth, allowing these elastics additional leverage to help it move your jaw or rotate teeth.

With these attachments, Invisalign is now capable of dealing with most of the oral health problems that braces can. This being the case, patients will be able to enjoy the convenience of Invisalign while dealing with their bite problems.

However, the only way to know for sure whether Invisalign can help you or not is to talk to a dentist who understands your unique situation. Reach out to one if you’re curious; they’ll be happy to tell you more about what options are available to you when they meet you in person.
