Invisalign is an incredible orthodontic treatment that addresses mild to moderate misalignments such as crossbites, overbites, open bites, and underbites using a customized sequence of virtually invisible clear aligners. While these aligners being so easy to remove can make this treatment significantly more comfortable and convenient for many patients, it also leads to the possibility of one of these appliances being lost or damaged when outside the mouth. Here’s what to do if you lose an Invisalign aligner.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign straightens teeth using a series of personalized clear aligners that are carefully crafted to snugly fit over the patient’s teeth. These appliances are specially shaped to exert the constant pressure needed to gradually push the teeth into a healthier and more beautiful alignment, and they must be worn for at least twenty hours daily to keep your treatment on track. Since they must be removed for meals and hygiene, it is possible for them to be accidentally damaged or thrown away when the patient is not wearing them.
What Should I Do if I Lose an Aligner?
There’s no need to panic if you lose your aligner. The first thing to do is to call your dentist to explain the situation. Depending on how long you have been wearing your aligner, they may recommend switching back to the previous aligner in the sequence to help your teeth stay in place while a replacement appliance is manufactured. Alternately, they may recommend simply switching to the next aligner in the sequence and continuing the treatment normally if you’re already almost done with the lost one.
How Can I Avoid Losing My Aligner?
Since Invisalign aligners are transparent, it may be hard to notice them when they are outside of the mouth, which can make it easy for them to be inadvertently crushed or thrown away. To prevent this, it’s important to always carry a small, sturdy, and clean container in which you can store your aligners when you are not wearing them. This will allow you to keep your aligners safely in your pocket when you are eating or cleaning your teeth.
Losing one of your Invisalign clear aligners does not mean that your orthodontic treatment has failed. Contacting your dentist can help you find the best way to keep your treatment on track.
