Getting Invisalign is a big lifestyle change! While sure, cleaning and caring for them will be much easier than with traditional braces, they may still require some modifications to your daily routine. Don’t let these adjustments take you off guard. Start implementing them now so you’re already adapted when your first set of aligners is ready to go.
Brush Up
Even though you aren’t getting traditional braces, you still need to brush after every meal with Invisalign. That’s because your teeth need to be clean before you can put your aligner back in after eating. Otherwise, you will be trapping bits of food and plaque on your teeth for hours with no way for them to be rinsed away. Get into the routine of brushing after each meal now so you don’t have to think twice about it once you’re wearing your aligners.
Adjust Your Mealtimes
Are you a snacker? With your new aligners, it is recommended that you wear them at least 22 hours a day. This means that taking them out every few hours for a snack will count against that time, giving you less time to enjoy full meals like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While some snacking is still okay, just be mindful of how long you’re spending eating, so you don’t go over the two-hour limit by grazing all day.
Stock Up
Prepare yourself with the essentials before you get your aligners, so you don’t have to worry about finding them in a hurry. Items to consider purchasing in advance are:
- aligner removal tools
- aligner cleanser
- a survival kit that includes:
- a travel toothbrush
- toothpaste
- a case for your aligners
- pain medication for any discomfort
- sugar free mints
- pre-threaded dental floss
Check Your Budget
Be sure you know how you will be paying for your treatment before you start so you’re not stressing about money when you should be eagerly anticipating your beautiful new smile. Contact your dental insurance provider to get an idea of how much of your treatment may be covered or secure any lines of credit you might use to pay for the procedure if you will be financing it.
Book Your Consultation
If you haven’t already, be sure to book your Invisalign consultation with your dentist. There, you can go over your proposed treatment plan, ask any questions, schedule follow-up appointments, and learn more about the cost of your aligners.
