Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
First and foremost, dental insurance is not meant to be used in the same way that medical insurance may be used. Unlike medical insurance, dental insurance is used regularly to cover preventive services, such as cleanings and exams. In contrast, medical insurance is typically used only during an emergency or when a serious illness develops. Preventive care is a huge part of maintaining long-term oral health, which is why these treatments are usually covered in full by most dental plans.
What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?
While every dental insurance plan is different and requires its own close examination, they generally cover specific sets of treatments in the same way. For example, a typical PPO dental breakdown looks like this:
- Essential preventive care is covered close to or at 100 percent. This includes biannual cleanings and checkups.
- Minor restorative care typically covers about 70 to 80 percent of the cost. These treatments include root canal therapy or tooth-colored fillings.
- Major restorative care is covered less, hovering around 50 to 60 percent. Insurance pays this portion for crowns, bridges and dentures.
- Keep in mind that cosmetic services are generally not covered by dental insurance.
Our In-Network Dental Insurance Providers
Being in-network simply means that our dental office has decided to agree to certain rates on specific treatments. That means if you are in-network with any of the plans listed below, it means you can save more money on certain treatments compared to those who are out-of-network. However, there are cases where the costs are largely the same even if you are out-of-network. Either way, our dental office is happy to file claims on your behalf.
